Winter Time & Holiday Reminders

We are heading into the end of 2024 and into the beginning of 2025 and that brings us to the holidays and Winter weather. Here are some pet safety tips!

Holiday Parties: Please do not feed any bones, turkey skin/fat, caffeine, chocolate, alcohol of any kind, onions, garlic, chives, and nuts. Ingestion of some of these may only cause gastric upset, but some may cause severe pancreatitis, abdominal blockage, neurological symptoms. Others may show no external effects, but may cause kidney failure. If you suspect your pet may have eaten any of these things, please call our office 503-640-0472.

Winter weather: Ice melt/snow melt, salt, etc... Please clean your dogs' feet thoroughly after walking on surfaces that have been treated. Most of the chemicals used are not fatal when ingested, but they can cause gastric upset. Antifreeze is highly toxic and can be fatal when ingested. Treatment must be started within 8-12 hours. If you think your dog or cat may have ingested antifreeze, call immediately or go to the Emergency Clinic.

Plants: ALL parts of Lilies are toxic to cats, including the pollen and the WATER. Please do not have them around your cats for any reason. Ingestion of any part of the plant or water may cause kidney failure and there may be NO outward symptoms. Call our office immediately if you think your cat has had contact with any lily plant. Other toxic plants to avoid include holly (Ilex),  azalea (Rhododendron),  yew (Taxus), boxwood (Buxus), amaryllis, cyclamen, kalanchoe, peace lily (Spathiphyllum), mistletoe, chrysanthemum and gardenia. Poinsettia, which is probably the most popular holiday plant of all, can irritate the skin, mouth, and stomach, but its toxicity is largely over-rated.
